Pamukkale, meaning "cotton
castle" in Turkish, is a natural site in Denizli Province in southwestern
Turkey. The city contains hot springs and travertines, terraces of carbonate
minerals left by the flowing water. It is located in Turkey's Inner Aegean
region, in the River Menderes valley, which has a temperate climate for most of
the year.
Pamukkale is a tourist attraction. It is
recognized as a World Heritage Site together with Hierapolis.
Hierapolis-Pamukkale was made a World Heritage Site in 1988.
Before the area was declared a World
Heritage Site it had its fair share of troubles. Vehicles were allowed up and down the hills
and hotels were built on top of the remains of Hierapolis. Today the vehicles are prohibited and the
hotels long since demolished, leaving the area to recover. People are allowed to bathe in the travertine
pools but are not allowed to wear shoes
